OpenAI’s Main Character Era: “Open-Weight” Model Coming Soon

Looks like OpenAI wants back in the group chat.
After years of gatekeeping its juiciest language models (remember when GPT-2 felt like a rebellious leak?), OpenAI is now planning to drop a fully open-weight model — and the AI girlies are buzzing.
What's the scoop?
According to TechCrunch, OpenAI will be releasing a new model that developers can actually run on their own hardware. This isn’t just a tiny test either — it’s rumored to have reasoning abilities close to “o3-mini,” which is OpenAI’s smaller-but-smart GPT-4 cousin. Translation: she’s mini but mighty.
CEO Sam Altman lowkey admitted they may have fumbled by not going open sooner. "We got it wrong," he said, basically pulling a “maybe the real open-source movement was the friends we made along the way” moment.

Why does this matter?
Because for years, the AI scene has been a mix of locked-up vaults (hi, ChatGPT) and rogue open-source models (shoutout Meta’s Llama). Now OpenAI wants to play in both worlds, which could totally shake up the vibes — and give smaller players more power.
They’re also hosting a series of dev events (starting in SF) to get the community involved. Think of it as the Coachella of AI but with fewer flower crowns and more Python.
